JIS MIAMI | BOOTH 2525
experienced mentors to find and train aspiring bench jewelers,
creating a structured pathway into employment while helping
businesses develop skilled talent from within.
For decades, many bench
jewelers learned through in-
formal apprenticeships. The
MJSA program builds on
that tradition by providing a
nationally recognized frame-
work that benefits both
employers and apprentices.
Participating apprentices
receive paid, hands-on
experience while learning
directly from seasoned pro-
fessionals, helping to pre-
serve technical knowledge
that might otherwise be lost as
experienced jewelers retire.
However, building a workforce begins long before someone
enters an apprenticeship.
One of Jewelers of America’s earliest touchpoints is its
Guide to Jewelry Careers, a resource distributed to schools
to introduce students to the wide variety of careers available
throughout the jewelry industry.
The guide highlights opportunities in bench jewelry, design,
gemology, manufacturing, retail, and business management,
helping students and educators recognize jewelry as a professional
career path rather than simply an occupation.
Career awareness is also receiving renewed attention
through BeAJeweler.com, the MJSA Education Foundation’s
website dedicated to promoting jewelry making as a profession.
The resource, supported by the JCK Industry Fund, introduces
prospective students, career changers, and educators to manu-
facturing-specific educational programs and career pathways.
SUPPORTING EDUCATION AND
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
For students interested in pursuing technical training, the
foundation’s annual “Future
of Jewelry Making” schol-
arships provide support to
those seeking to turn their
passion for jewelry mak-
ing, design, and repair into
rewarding careers.
Additionally, the
Steven and Evelyn
Holzman Bench Scholar-
ship is offered by Jewelers
of America annually to
reduce financial barriers to
bench education. The scholarship supports individuals seeking
formal bench jeweler training, making specialized education
more accessible while encouraging the next generation of
craftspeople to enter the trade.

apprentice graduate of the MJSA Mentor
